The Wines of Beaujolais
(Victoria Park)
We're massive fans of Beaujolais here, and find the wines sell throughout the year; we knew the reds are very summery but think that they make a great winter alternative to white wine as well! So it is high time that we focussed on this underrated (if somewhat infuriating) region. We'll start with an example of the less familiar Beaujolais Blanc grown in the north of the region on the border with Maconnais. Next we'll trace the rise in quality levels through straight Beaujolais rouge to Beaujolais Villages. Then we will try wines from at least five of the nine crus (Moulin a Vent, Fleurie etc), including at least one example with plenty of bottle age and also Jean Foillard's epic (and £25 per bottle!) Morgon Cote de Py. As usual informal but high quality food will be served including a fish dish to show off the Gamay grape's flexibility.
